Alexander Sims has collaborated with fully-sustainable and circular eyewear brand Coral Eyewear to design a limited-edition pair of sunglasses.
The sunglasses feature a distinctive polarised red lens that nods to Sims’ Mahindra Racing livery in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The red lenses are coordinated with bold black frames in Coral Eyewear’s best-selling Albacore style and manufactured in the brand’s signature material, ECONYL.
ECONYL is an innovative way of recycling harmful plastic waste and improves animal welfare, as it is created from regenerated ocean fishing nets and fabric scraps from sea and landfill. Almost 600,000 tonnes of fishing nets are abandoned in oceans every year, which take up to 600 years to break down and cause immeasurable harm to animals during that time.
The luxury frames are also infinitely recyclable thanks to Coral Eyewear’s circular initiative, offering customers 10% off their next purchase for every old pair returned.
“Coral Eyewear has changed my thinking about sunglasses and glasses,” explains Sims. “I was staggered to learn that nine million pairs of glasses and sunglasses manufactured from virgin plastic are sold in the UK each year. Every sustainable change counts and I’m pleased to be collaborating with Coral Eyewear on these limited-edition sunglasses produced from waste plastic and abandoned fishing nets. Together we aim to raise more awareness of the difference that can be made by choosing sustainable and circular products such as these. Not only have I switched my sunglasses, but I am also wearing Coral Eyewear’s frames on a daily basis and while behind-the-wheel in Formula E.”
Newly-launched Coral Eyewear is backed by entrepreneur, philanthropist and TV personality, Jake Humphrey, and is spearheaded by 20-year old University of East Anglia student, George Bailey.
George Bailey, Co-Founder of Coral Eyewear, says: “We’re so excited to be working with Alexander who has a proven track-record when it comes to both sustainability and high-performance environments. With Alexander wearing our glasses and sunglasses, we really believe we can change the way people see the entire eyewear industry.”
